This was a game of two halves and Torquay will be kicking themselves that they didn't put more on the board in the first 40 whilst the pack was rampant. Tony McCarthy had an uncharacteristically poor time with the boot, and the Tics only had tries from Matt Beringham and Jon Arnold to show for their 10-6 half time lead. The visitors came out of the blocks after the interval, and a purple patch saw them race to 23-10 before the Tics scored near the end to give the scoreline a fairer balance. The hot weather might have highlighted fitness deficits and Jimmy Hill spent 10 in the bin — but nonetheless Torquay will see this as one that got away.
