Torquay 20-12 Brixham

Torquay were good for this hard fought win in front of a bumper crowd at the Rec. The Tics had the lion’s share of possession but might rue the fact that they never nosed too far in front until the dying moments of the game after being awarded a clear penalty try. Rob Boles got the other try to cap a sterling performance in the centre. The Torquay back line were lively throughout and that was the probable difference between the two sides. All in all, this performance was just the ticket ahead of another crucial local derby next weekend, away to Paignton in the Devon Cup. It should be a cracker....

Torquay 24-15 St Ives

This was a fantastic game between two well matched sides, although the Tics never lost the lead after some guile and nifty footwork put James Murray through for the opening try. The Tics quickly compounded their lead with a well taken try from George Mills. It looked like the Tics would race away with the spoils, but some ill-discipline tested the patience of Ref Andy Coles, who understandably penalised against Torquay to set St Ives up to retaliate with a great score of their own. A further penalty conversion to the Cornishmen meant that things were tight at the break, and the pattern continued into the second-half. Rob Boles went over for the Tics, but St Ives plugged away to get a try to put them back within one score, only to leave Torquay stand-out stand-off Luke Bettesworth to drop a clever goal to seal the game.

Torquay 19-33 Launceston Academy

Torquay’s youngsters played with guile and gusto in this highly entertaining fixture at the Rec. In bitingly cold conditions the Tics hinted at a promising New Year and pushed a strong Launceston side hard for the whole 80 minutes. Luke Bettesworth was assured at Fly-half, and Mike Beeson was busy all over the park. Australian Joe Azercurk also had his strongest game for the First XV to date. It was still a loss, but the crowd, players and coaching staff were all certainly upbeat as the final whistle blew. With the Tics realistically out of League contention, and without the pressure of relegation this season, perhaps the way forward is to continue to blood the new boys and up comings - certainly if this showing is anything to go on, that would be a popular move. Happy New Year to you all.
