Clearly the worst result that the Rec’s home supporters have witnessed in some time - tempered only by the unseasonably pleasant weather and sunshine. Torquay’s by now familiar makeshift side creaked from the off under Taunton’s confident and structured League leading approach. The Tics’ unfamiliarity with each other left huge gaps in the 10 and 12 channels as the Torquay defence drifted, and the streetwise visitors exploited this to the full, with many of their tries coming from deep and ending close to the uprights, allowing Taunton to miss just one conversion. With the League campaign well receiving its last rites well and truly - the Tics need to take a long hard look at their ambitions, as well as hoping for an upturn in individual form and availability if they are to make a serious assault on the Devon Cup.....

Paignton 5-12 Torquay (Devon Cup Quarters)

Torquay did enough in this keenly contested, floodlit match at Queens Park. The evenly matched sides tested each other gingerly for the first hour and this may have stifled the game as a free-running spectacular, but like a matador closing in on a bull, the intensity ratcheted up towards the end. The Cherries’ Dan Swar always looked dangerous with the ball in hand, and arguably the home side threatened the visitors’ tryline more frequently - but inevitably the Tics had far more control over the whole 80, and the pressure yielded enough kickable penalties to progress to the next round, at home on the Rec, provisionally 21st March.....
