FULL-BACK James Wood made his first start of the
season since recovering from a shoulder injury and
justified his selection by scoring all Torquay's
points.
However, despite leading 11-3 at the break, and 14-3
soon after, the visitors were unable to hold on to
their advantage and slipped to a late 17-14 defeat at
Ivybridge.
Tics' pack were on top throughout but the inability
to turn pressure into points against a well-organised
defence cost them the game.
Wood came into the line for a try and booted over a
couple of penalties for the half-time lead, while
home scrum-half Steve Atkinson had kicked a penalty
in response.
Things looked good for Tics as Wood extended their
lead with his third penalty, but Ivybridge hit back
with a spell of pressure that brought about a
converted try for full-back Tom Kitchenham, which
narrowed the gap to four points.
Torquay
looked to have the game won but Ivybridge ran the
ball from their own 22 in injury time to put debut
winger Joshua Perkins in for a wide-out try to which
Atkinson added his second conversion of the
afternoon.
This loss — their eleventh of the season — sees
Torquay slip closer to the relegation zone as
Sidmouth and Yatton, both immediately below, gained a
point apiece as a result of a 21-all outcome in East
Devon.
