Torquay 0-44 Hartpury College

Late tries do battling Tics no favours
Monday, January 18, 2010, 09:29

This game went ahead after a sterling effort from Ken Evans and his ground staff volunteers as they were out from 0930 scooping and forking. The Tics will inevitably be disappointed in that they took their eye off the ball for two periods in the match and both times the talented students took ruthless advantage. The match was 0-0 at 20 minutes and 0-14 at 23! The second half was 0-3 going in to the last 10 minutes! That said Ben Cole taught the rugby wannabes a thing or two about line-out tactics as he dominated this aspect on the day, and Jon Arnold showed what can happen when seasoned man meets the apprentice on the field, as he on more than one occasion gave the students a lesson in abrasive, ball-carrying contact......

Torquay Ath 0, Hartpury 44
TORQUAY didn't expect to win this game against the unbeaten divisional leaders, but still came away from it feeling a little hard done by.
Having gone 22-nil down in the first half, the Tics only conceded one more try in the next 35 minutes.
Two tries in the last five minutes – both of them disputed – gave Hartpury a slightly flattering margin of victory.
"The first try looked like a forward pass and for the for the second they came in at the side of a ruck and stole the ball without the referee seeing," said Torquay's director of rugby Mike McDonald.

"Thirty points would have been a fair margin. Forty-four didn't reflect the game, although they are a quality side and fully deserved to win."
Ben Cole had an oustanding game in the second row for Torquay, winning his own ball and some of Hartpury's.
Skipper Jon Arnold went closest to scoring for Torquay when he surged for the line but was tap tackled short.
