Although initially Barnstaple battled well and made life very difficult for the Tics.

Torquay again had some players missing and had to rearrange their back line and this at first made life hard as Barnstaple put the Torquay backs under pressure as they ran at them and kept the ball out wide. Torquay were slow to get going but it was a good backs move that Arren Graham finished that put Torquay into the lead. Con missed.

Barnstaple played their way back into the game and managed to pounce onto a loose ball following a good high kick in blustery conditions. This gave Barnstaple their try and with the conversion going over put them into the lead at the end of the half.

Torquay played better in the second half and with their back row players George Mills and Rory Williams making good ground on a number of occasions put Barnstaple on the back foot.

Torquay managed to score two more tries through George Mills and Ollie Hill who both finished well following a good faze of recycling from the Tics. Arren Graham converted George Mills try.

This was a good result for Torquay who managed to bounce back following their recent losses.

Cheers

Paul Walsh

Wiveliscombe 12 vs Torquay Colts 10

Wiveliscombe 12 vs Torquay Colts 10

The first half started evenly enough with both sides making chances for themselves and it was Torquay that scored first on 14 mins. Torquay producing some good open play by the forwards enabling the backs to have an overlap that Arren Graham made the most of to score out wide. Conversion missed.

The teams continued to battle on a fairly even basis but on 27 mins a strong forward drive took Wivvy up the field to end in a try . Conversion missed. The rest of the half continued in the same vein.

The second half wivvy placed more pressure on the TICS and started to win more possession and even turned over some of Torquay's ball. This in it self put more pressure on the TICS who seemed unable to play their way out of their own half.

As usual Torquay's defence held strong and on 27 mins managed to break out of their own half by a good run from Arran Hearn who was able to off load to Tom Harris who went around the full back to score. Conversion was missed.

Wivvy came back strongly and the remainder of the half was played in Torquay's end. Torquay seemed unable to clear their line and continued to miss touch with clearance kicks. Torquay thought they had done enough when the ref called last play. It was a five meter scrum, Torquay put in but again Wivvy put pressure on them. Torquay managed to fumble the ball over their own try line for a Wivvy player to pounce and score. The conversion was good and Wivvy took the win.

The semi final will be played at Crediton this Sunday. The kick off time will be 5 o'clock. Torquay have requested this as they have four players away skiing and depending on flight times may get back for the game. They will also be without the try scoring Tom Harris who is also away on holiday. With two other players having to work it has not turned out to be the best weekend to play a semi final. This will really test the resilience of the Torquay side, who face a very strong Crediton side who have only lost three games in their league this season.

Paul Walsh

Devon Merit Semi Final Crediton Colts 13 vs Torquay Colts 3

Crediton Colts 13 vs Torquay Colts 3

Crediton started the first half with a clear game plan in mind. They used their possession well by kicking down the touch line, putting pressure on the clearing kicks and using their own line out to set up a rolling maul. Their forwards were well rehearsed in this type of rugby and Torquay found it virtually impossible to maintain any possession.

Crediton used this well and scored their first try by using this exact method. Conversion missed. Torquay came back with a penalty kick but shortly after conceded a penalty for Crediton to finish the half 8-3 up.

The second half started in the sane manor and it wasn't to long for Crediton to complete another rolling maul to score their second try. Conversion missed.

Torquay then compounded there problems by George Mills being yellow carded for getting offside in a ruck. This meant a tough ten mins for Torquay but they managed to hold it together. Torquay did try to open the game up in the last twenty mins as they stepped up the pressure. Trying to run the ball and keep it away from the Crediton pack was the only way Torquay were going to get back in to the game.

Torquay battled away at the Credit line but the Crediton defence to their credit held strong.

Crediton were worthy winners and used their game plan well. They had a very strong side that were quick to the breakdown and out side in the backs. Torquay played really well in the first half and were only trailing 5-6 at the break. In particular George Mills and Will Bennett played outstanding in defence.
The second half was more difficult for Torquay as they made 10 changes and lost Jo Ward and Liam McCarthy, who both ended up in Hospital. Unfortunately Jo clashed heads with one of his own players and fractured an eye socket and Liam badly pulled his groin.
This took the edge off a hard working Torquay side who eventually went down 20 - 5, following three tries from Renne.
Jo had to spend the night in hospital but was released the next day.
On the Sunday in what was terrible wet windy conditions Renne managed to turn out enough players so that we could play a 10 aside tournament. With driving rain and a very wet pitch the two sides did their best in what was very difficult circumstances.

The first half was a fairly even contest with both sides trying their best to produce some running rugby. In such wet conditions the ball often went to ground and mistakes were made. Torquay were given an early opportunity to score when awarded a penalty in front of the posts that was missed. It was not until the last few minutes of the first half following a scrum on the Kingsbridge 22 that a neat kick from Henry Raby was chased and caught by winger Ollie Hill who rounded the defence to score a neat try. Tom Blight kicked the conversion.
Kingsbridge may well feel disappointed at this stage as they did have allot of possession in this half and put Torquay under some pressure but the Torquay defence held strong.

The second half, due to the weather, turned into a forward battle and both sides to their credit worked very hard as the conditions got worst.

As the half went on Torquay's forwards started to get on top and it was midway through this half that produced Torquay's second try following some sustained forward pressure. The end result being a forward drive and try for prop Tom Channon. Converted by Arren Graham.

Torquay's third and final try was produced from some good running from the Torquay backs in particular Tom Harris who rounded three defending players to then off load to winger Josh Heath to score in the corner. Arren Graham slotted the conversion from out wide.

Torquay deserved this win in very difficult conditions for their battling determination against a very strong Kingsbridge side who on a different day and conditions would have been able to run at Torquay and would have produced more pressure.

This win puts Torquay into the semi finals of the Devon Colts merit table and it looks likely that they will have to play either Exeter Chiefs or Crediton from the North and East division. Ivybridge are the other Team from the south and west to go through. These rounds will be played mid April.

Torquay Colts have a weekend to look forward too following some fairly tense weeks of rugby. Nuneaton to their credit started as you would expect, started well and came at Torquay quickly and at pace. Torquay did use the wind well and pinned Nuneaton back in the 22 initially. It was Nuneaton pressure that led to the first points of the afternoon as a dropped pass from the Torquay backs led to a pick up and race to the line for Nuneaton's Ben Gilbert. Conversion good Tom Short.

The nuns second try came from outside and good handling from a very slick Nuneaton back line. There powerful wingman Bret Chatwin showing his pace as he rounded the Torquay defence. No conversion.

Torquay did respond from the restart after the Nuns failed to clear their lines that resulted in a penalty in front of the posts. Aaron de young slotted the kick over.

Nuns came back once again with their backs following a scrum on the Torquay 22 and once again wingman Brett Chatwin showing his great pace and finishing skill for his second. No conversion.

Torquay did finish the half with some spirit that allowed them to be awarded a penalty that De young kicked. 17-6

Nuns continued their pressure into the second half that again forced Torquay into errors and not clearing their line or making use of a strong cross field wind. Nuns pack capitalised on this and after only 5 mins Nuns had scored another converted try through Jamie Ashley.

The Nuns number 10 did make full use of the wind and continually placed the ball back down into the TICS 22. He also hit Torquay with a drop goal on 10 mins, stretching the Nuns lead away.

Torquay to their credit continued to compete and their forwards battled their way back into the game. On 15 mins an unusual mistake from the Nuns backs enabled Tom Harris to collect the ball, go round two players on his way to the try line. Aaron de young converted. 27-13

The Nuns came back again and further forward pressure led to the ball going wide again for Dan Elkerton to score. No conversion.

Torquay refused to give up hope and from a scrum in the nuns 22 Henry Raby went blind to off load to Aaron Graham to beat his man to score. De Young with the conversion.

The Nuns did have the last say in the game as the number 10 Short slotted a penalty on 32 mins.

The young Tics to their credit battled right to the end and refused to give up. The number 10 then put a high kick up for his backs to chase. The Shelford 15 miss judged the kick for it to bounce once and land in the open arms of the chasing Tom Harris who raced in from the 22 to score Torquay's first try. De Young slotted the conversion.

Torquay at this stage were playing well and not giving Shelford any time on the ball and as much as Shelford try to run Torquay's defence held strong. Torquay continued to put the pressure on Shelford and it was their forwards that produced a good pick and drive for George Mills to go over on 22 mins in the corner. Con missed.

Shelford then picked up a gear and the last 10 mins of the first half was all them. There efforts were rewarded on 31 mins with a penalty kick and followed by a well worked try on 38 mins. No conversion.

The second half continued in the same vein with Shelford determined to play themselves back into the game. This was followed from the restart by a brilliant piece of individual skill from Tom Harris, who received the ball in his own 22 and managed to wrong foot three attacking Truro players and break out toward the half way line. With only the fullback to beat he drew him in and off loaded to supporting players. The pressure was relieved after 25 mins when Jo Ward put a high kick up from the base of a scrum just inside the Torquay half which bounced awkwardly for the Truro full back, who up to that point had played very well under the high ball. Good defensive pressure from Torquay's own half caused Tavistock to lose posetion and Torquay capitalised on this when their forwards pounced on the lose ball and drove up the field going through four fazes of recycling before good hands from the backs enabled Tom Harris to wrong foot the defence to go over. The game played at the boy's grammar school was made hard work by Torquay who failed to establish a firm authority on the game.

The game was a fierce struggle between two packs still dusting the cobwebs from the off season, with this in mind Torquay gained control of the scrum due to a great effort from the tight five and again bossed the lineouts with the magic from George Mills who played out of his skin at No.8.

Scrum Half Joe Ward and Centre Tom Harris both passed over the line to score doubles and other tries from Aaron Grahame and Chris Slack also helped to widen the margin. Tavistock only managed to score from one of three penalty attempts which set the tone for a disappointing first game for the visitors.

The game was full of cheap penalties in Tavistock's favour, in particular when the Tavistock openside flanker was playing the ball with his feet while lying on the floor more than a metre offside, he received a penalty after Torquays Lock Dan Davis and Blindside Backrower Pete Forster were seen giving him a well deserved shoe. The string of penalties seemed to fizzle out any pattern of play from Torquay's backs which fitted in along with sloppy play and half arsed rucking from Torquay's pack

In all a good result for Torquay and a strong start for our Devon Cup plans although we will be looking to seriously improve on the mistakes in today's game.

Credit is due to the 1st years who played extremely well and really fronted up to the challenge of colts rugby, it looks to be a fantastic season ahead!
