Torquay
Colts 21 vs Kingsbridge Colts 0 - League
game.
The conditions on Saturday made it very difficult to produce very much rugby. With driving rain and a very wet pitch the two sides did their best in what was very difficult circumstances.
The first half was a fairly even contest with both sides trying their best to produce some running rugby. In such wet conditions the ball often went to ground and mistakes were made. Torquay were given an early opportunity to score when awarded a penalty in front of the posts that was missed. It was not until the last few minutes of the first half following a scrum on the Kingsbridge 22 that a neat kick from Henry Raby was chased and caught by winger Ollie Hill who rounded the defence to score a neat try. Tom Blight kicked the conversion.
Kingsbridge may well feel disappointed at this stage as they did have allot of possession in this half and put Torquay under some pressure but the Torquay defence held strong.
The second half, due to the weather, turned into a forward battle and both sides to their credit worked very hard as the conditions got worst.
As the half went on Torquay's forwards started to get on top and it was midway through this half that produced Torquay's second try following some sustained forward pressure. The end result being a forward drive and try for prop Tom Channon. Converted by Arren Graham.
Torquay's third and final try was produced from some good running from the Torquay backs in particular Tom Harris who rounded three defending players to then off load to winger Josh Heath to score in the corner. Arren Graham slotted the conversion from out wide.
Torquay deserved this win in very difficult conditions for their battling determination against a very strong Kingsbridge side who on a different day and conditions would have been able to run at Torquay and would have produced more pressure.
This win puts Torquay into the semi finals of the Devon Colts merit table and it looks likely that they will have to play either Exeter Chiefs or Crediton from the North and East division. Ivybridge are the other Team from the south and west to go through. These rounds will be played mid April.
Torquay Colts have a weekend to look forward too following some fairly tense weeks of rugby. On Friday they are catching the morning ferry from Plymouth going to stay the weekend in Rennes. They have two games scheduled on Saturday and Sunday and are looking forward to having some fun and enjoying some social rugby.Rennes rugby club are providing the games as they appear to have strong numbers at this age group and will also be providing some entertainment after the games that the players and parents shall organise.
