Having arrived late due to the coach bursting a tyre on the motorway Torquay produced enough good rugby to keep a very large and strong Bridgewater team at bay.
Having arrived late due to the coach bursting a tyre on the motorway Torquay produced enough good rugby to keep a very large and strong Bridgewater team at bay.
The game was played at pace with both sides producing some excellent flowing rugby. Bridgewater had a larger set of forwards and played the game tight trying to battle and maul their way up the park, with Torquay having to defend in numbers and use their ball wisely when it came to them.
The first points came on 10 mins following a good beak from the base of the scrum by Henry Raby and a good running line from Arran De Young enabling him to score under the posts. DeYoung also kicked the conversion.
Torquay's second followed on 15 mins after being pinned back in their own twenty two again managing to win some lose possession, breaking out on the blind side and producing some good handling that enabled Ollie Hill to race half the field to score under the posts. DeYoung kicked the con.
On 22 mins following some good pressure from Bridgewater they were awarded a penalty on the Torquay 22 line that they successfully converted. They continued to put Torquay under pressure and scored their first try on 34 mins following a kick and chase that Torquay didn't deal with. Con kicked.
Torquay were awarded a penalty from the restart and Arran DeYoung slotted over from out wide.
The second half continued at a good pace and on 10 mins Bridgewater showed their determination with a try. No con. Torquay's response was quick and precise on 14 mins when Liam McCarthy finished off a good running move. No con.
Torquay pushed themselves further in front when DeYoung kicked another penalty on 16 mins. Joe Ward scored Torquay's next points on 20 mins following some further good open play from Torquay. De Young converted.
With 20 mins to go Bridgewater stepped up a gear and produced a try on 24 mins, no con, and on 39 mins, con kicked, which kept the game open and very entertaining.
In reflection a fair result with Torquay defending well and at times handling the ball well.
It was the right game to prepare themselves for next Sundays Quarter final Nation Colts Cup fixture against Shelford. Kick off will be at 12.30 p.m.and the young TICS looking to get a big crowd behind them.
