League Game 1- Torquay Colts 40-3 Tavistock Colts
A good
start to the season with our first fixture also being
our first league match as well. The game played at
the boy's grammar school was made hard work by
Torquay who failed to establish a firm authority on
the game.
The game was a fierce struggle between two packs still dusting the cobwebs from the off season, with this in mind Torquay gained control of the scrum due to a great effort from the tight five and again bossed the lineouts with the magic from George Mills who played out of his skin at No.8.
Scrum Half Joe Ward and Centre Tom Harris both passed over the line to score doubles and other tries from Aaron Grahame and Chris Slack also helped to widen the margin. Tavistock only managed to score from one of three penalty attempts which set the tone for a disappointing first game for the visitors.
The game was full of cheap penalties in Tavistock's favour, in particular when the Tavistock openside flanker was playing the ball with his feet while lying on the floor more than a metre offside, he received a penalty after Torquays Lock Dan Davis and Blindside Backrower Pete Forster were seen giving him a well deserved shoe. The string of penalties seemed to fizzle out any pattern of play from Torquay's backs which fitted in along with sloppy play and half arsed rucking from Torquay's pack
In all a good result for Torquay and a strong start for our Devon Cup plans although we will be looking to seriously improve on the mistakes in today's game.
Credit is due to the 1st years who played extremely well and really fronted up to the challenge of colts rugby, it looks to be a fantastic season ahead!
