Confirmed winners of Devon merit 1 and the only senior side to remain unbeaten in Devon may I add..We had a great last game against second placed Barnstaple who put up a real battle. We played the first half into a strong wind and were pinned in our own half for the majority of the time, our defence was second to none and whatever Barum threw at us we smashed them back. They had a hard hitting fit pack and some flare outside the scrum but our boys were set on remaining undefeated. Barum missed 2 penalties in the first half one hitting the bar, they even failed a drop goal attempt which showed their frustration at not scoring any tries. Going into half time 0-0 we made 1 change in the pack and were up for playing with the wind, the tides changed and we relented the Barum line. Tony McCarthy kicked three excellent penalties in the second half and Dave Carpenter as ever led the team well as captain. The message to the players was to stand up and be counted and to leave nothing on the pitch and we certainly done that. The game finished 9-0 and Barum were gracious in defeat and we enjoyed some old fashioned drinking games in the club, they really are an excellent club who play similar rugby to ourselves and are true gentleman.
It's a shame we can't go up into another league as we have won Merit 1 two years running. at the top of merit 1 the teams could certainly compete in the top half our Devon & Cornwall if not Western Counties. We have had great strength in depth this season and have had a few regular players made themselves regulars in the first's, including hard hitting Matt Jarrett and the diverse back Ed Cribb.
Player's who had a good game were Jimmy Hill at 12, Lukes Burns 7, who's come back from serious injury to finish the season strong, He's now off to join James Wood in Australia to play rugby for a year and we wish them both well. all in all it was superb team performance.

Cheers
Fletcher Larkin

Extras overwhelm depleted Ivybridge

Ivybridge came over with 15 players and two of them got injured, so we were playing against 13 for a while, apart from when Paul wood and Jason Marshall got sin binned for alleged off-sides and late tackles. It was never going to be pretty but we managed to keep a clean sheet at the top of the league. We lost some key player's to the 1st team including Ryan Chivers who was down to start at 8 and our fly half Richard Wood. We started with Jon Brookes in the row who was Barnstable's man of the match with Dan Williams back at No8. Paul Birchall played at 10 and we brought in Promising colt Joe Ward who had an exceptional game at outside centre. The game started slow with both sides struggling to work each other out. Tony McCarthy kicked an early penalty which was returned by Barum. We had some good early breaks from Joe ward and ever improving ex teignmouth player Simon Dorey who could of been in for a try if he'd opted not to try and hurdle a Barum player which he got penalised for. We finally broke their defence and winger Richard Sutherland went over in the corner. Barum slotted another penalty to make it 8-6 at the break. We played with alot of heart and the defence was solid in the second half, yet we couldn't seem to convert pressure into points until ex regular player Lewis White came on off the bench to go over in the corner from a well linked forward/back try. Barum camped on our line which seemed an eternity until they finally went over in the corner in about the 7th minute of injury time. They needed to convert to even the scores but didn't manage it. We deserved to win the game even though we weren't at our best. Dave Carpenter had a good game and his half time talk seemed to inspire the team. Final score 13-11w

Cheers
Fletch

Exmouth 12-20 Torquay Extras

Exmouth away another great result for the boys W 20-12. A Late cry off from fly half Richard Wood meant some last minute replacement problems, The colts game was cancelled so we brought in promising player Joe Ward. Paul Birchell went from 12 to 10 with Ward going on the wing. Didn't have a great start due to one or two players arriving late, this meant our usual preparation was effected, not the start we wanted away to the undefeated Exmouth. We started the first half against the wind on the narrow Exmouth 2nd pitch, Tony McCarthy kicked an early penalty to give us an early lead. It was an intense first half against a well organised Exmouth. But with the likes of Paul Langdell and Sean McCarthy in the pack we started to dominate the scrums often wheeling 90 on their ball. Exmouth managed to break our usually solid defence to give them a 5-3 half time lead. Second half we brought off Matt Lyle and put John Brookes in the row taking out captain Dave Carpenter and playing him at 8, replacing Simon Dorey who went to his preferred blindside. Matt Barlow got his crack at 9 replacing Dan Taylor. We started well and put points on the board through a try from Tony Mc which he converted. Joe Ward who whenever he got the ball looked dangerous scored a great try outside on his senior debut. We gathered more momentum and scored again through hard working hooker matt Jarrett, Jarrett was then binned for an off the ball offence. Having gone down to 14 men we conceded a late try finishing 20-12 winners. For most of the second half the scrums went uncontested due to injuries to both Exmouth props. We are now 6 undefeated at the top of the table.

Fletch

Brixham Crusaders 6 Torquay Extras 20 (Merit)

EXTRAS CONTINUE WINNING START TO SEASON

Report courtesy of the Herald Express

EXTRAS CONTINUE WINNING START TO SEASON

11:00 - 09 October 2007

Defending champions Torquay Extras continued their winning start in the Devon Merit Table wth a 39-12 win over visiting Tiverton.

Early tries from James Murray and Tony McCarthy (2) put Torquay into an early lead.

The Tics stuck to the game plan, with the forwards and backs linking up well and by half time were 29-0 up.
The Torquay back row of Matt Lyle, Dan Williams and Jason Marshall showed up particularly well in the forward exchanges.

Tiverton changed their tactics in the second half, keeping the ball tight in the forwards, and pulled a try back.

Torquay responded with a try from Richard Wood, but the momentum of the first half eluded them and Tiverton pulled another try back.

Torquay stepped up a gear as the clock ran down and conjured up two tries, one credited to the forwards and another to wing Rob Boles.
