POWELL: MORE TO TICS THAN PACK POWER

Coach Drew Powell was particularly pleased with the First XV 14-8 winning performance given the nature of both defeats in the 2006-7 fixtures. He was keen to point out though that Torquay need to press home the consequent advantage over the next few fixtures to open a gap between the League's leading teams and the rest of the pack.

Torquay coach Drew Powell claimed the derby win over Brixham proved his side have more in their armoury than brute force up front.Said Powell: "Brixham picked the biggest set of forwards they could find, including a couple of players who have hardly played this season to take us on.

"If you added the weights up they probably had one more man than us, but other than the first scrum we were solid.

"Our back row had the edge over theirs - Tom Havill was outstanding - but outside we created a lot more than they did.

"Brixham never looked like scoring a try until they did; throughout the game we had Ollie Pitts, before he went off injured, Matt Jackson and Ben Dommett constantly probing the Brixham defence.

"Brixham came on strong at the end when they got back to 14-8, when they knew a converted try would win it for them. We needed strong defence got it.

"Both sides knew it would be a tight game as that's what both games were last year. There isn't a lot between us and this time we had the edge that made the difference.

"It probably wasn't a great game to watch, but it was certainly absorbing. After not taking a point off Brixham last year it was nice to take two of them."
