Match Review

Torquay 3-17 Barnstaple

The Season fizzled out as the Tics were beaten by a Barum side who were on the successful hunt for a home play-off. The coaching staff will be heartened by a keen resistance though despite injury disruption before and during the game, with all replacements being used by the half-time whistle. Indeed a sub-plot to the game's entertainment was a Paramedic trying to establish whether Nick Gill was indeed concussed... a dilemma indeed.Full Match REPORT can be read here...

Barton Hill 28-27 Torquay

The Tics were left exasperated as victory eluded the improvised travellers, no matter what they did it seemed. Highlight of the trip? Outpacing Brixham's Team Bus in a close fought race for the line on the return leg. The season finishes next week when Torquay face play-off contenders Barnstaple at the Rec next w/e...

Exmouth 13-6 Torquay Devon Cup semi-final

Torquay gave away the Devon Cup in this well contested fixture, but the Tics must be frustrated, as despite the squad being depleted with injuries and unavailabilities, the Tics were in close contention at half-time turning around with the wind at their backs....

Torquay 34-17 Newton Abbot

Torquay will be pleased to get back to winning ways, and Coach Drew Powell was certainly upbeat after this convincing win and the sentiment will be shared by the Torquay contingent of the bumper crowd.

Taunton 13-9 Torquay

No doubt that the right side won this contest, although Taunton did their level best not to score in this match blighted by injuries, sin-binnings and indifferent decision making by the Home side in particular. Still Taunton won't complain given that Brixham walloped their promotion rivals and the Tic's impending Devon Cup nemesis Exmouth 20-0

Torquay 26-0 Yatton

Skipper Ben Passenger can have few complaints about this fixture - as well as building a team to defend the Devon Cup, the Tics raised over £3000 for local cancer charities (early estimates). The large crowd, many dressed in pink to show their support, enjoyed some fine tries in the winter sunshine, well done all.....

Brixham 12-5 Torquay

Torquay can't have too many complaints in conceding this match to Brixham, and failing to get a hat-trick in 2007-8 over the Fishermen to boot. Brixham were obviously keen to avoid further humiliation at the hands of their Bay Rivals, and their desire to grab the two league points in their quest to pull away from the bottom-end, also-ran melee, kind of showed from the off. Torquay must have wondered how they were only 7-0 down at half-time after an indifferent first 40 characterised by poor line kicking and a paucity of possession. The Tics rallied after the first hour and might have sneaked an unjust victory after being camped on the Brixham line towards the end of the match, however it wasn't to be and the Fishermen lifted the Reg Brewer cup.

Torquay 16-6 Hornets

Torquay couldn't relax until they scored their second try late in the second-half against a never say die Hornets XV. To be fair the Tics could have been out of sight much earlier had the passing game been a bit more considered. Nonetheless fine performances from the tight-five and scrum-half Ed Cribb will buoy the Tics ahead of their second visit in as many weeks to Astley Park when they play Brixham in the League next weekend.

Brixham 3-16 Torquay

The Tics were convincing winners in the first game of their 2007/8 Devon Cup campaign. The defending champions were down to 12 men at one point and Brixham were reduced to 13 as Mr Watters saw yellow mid-way through the first half, and the game had the tension and flash-points one would expect in a local derby. Torquay will be pleased that they managed to nil the Brixham try count, and barring two opportunities early in the game, the hosts never looked like troubling the visitors' try-line. The question now is whether Torquay can repeat the feat when the two sides meet again in a fortnight for the Astley Park League match.

Exmouth 24-12 Torquay

Torquay failed to avenge the corresponding home defeat travesty and conceded too many sin-bins, soft-tries and penalties to ever really put pressure on the Cockles, although said Cockles were sweating following late Tics' frenetic effort (Ohh err Missus!). Hopefully the Tics will recover post-Christmas match form in time for their Devon Cup defence vs Codheads next week....

Barnstaple 15-9 Torquay

Captain Ben Passenger felt that the TIcs were nowhere near at their best in this close defeat. Things weren't helped by a few unavailabilities and injuries, the latter having an impact before and during the game! Even before Season mid-way, the impending fixture at Barnstaple 24th November has assumed much gravitas if Torquay want to stay in the promotion chase.

Torquay 3-9 Exmouth

Torquay failed to capitalize on their complete domination in this game leaving a bemused Exmouth XV with the spoils. The game at times bore more than a passing resemblance to gridiron given the frustrating number of timeouts, with the Cockles having an indeterminable run of injuries throughout the whole 80. At one point a boot change stopped play for a good few minutes! This along with Exmouth spoiling, organised defence and an uncharacteristic off-day for Jacko with the boot made for a very odd game of Rugby indeed...

Hornets 7-29 Torquay

Torquay consolidated their place amongst the League front-runners with this well worked win. The bonus was the clear demonstration of strength in depth as the side had several changes from the one that beat Brixham the week before. The Tics now look forward to upcoming crucial games against Exmouth and Barnstaple over the next month.

Torquay 14-8 Brixham

Torquay were good value for this win, against a side that would be playing a couple of Leagues lower if they didn't have the proven knack of playing 'til the final whistle! Brixham have consistently won games in the dying stages, and the Tics couldn't relax until the Ref blew the 80....

POWELL: MORE TO TICS THAN PACK POWER

Coach Drew Powell was particularly pleased with the First XV 14-8 winning performance given the nature of both defeats in the 2006-7 fixtures. He was keen to point out though that Torquay need to press home the consequent advantage over the next few fixtures to open a gap between the League's leading teams and the rest of the pack.

Dings Crusaders 22-5 Torquay

Torquay acquitted themselves admirably in this tough, National Cup away draw, against National League Three opponents Dings Crusaders. The Bristol side had too much savvy in the forward loose play, and the Tics found that they were living off scraps of possession. However Coach Drew Powell can be particularly pleased with a robust defence and the fact that Torquay competed fully for the whole eighty minutes.

Yatton 17-18 Torquay

If there were League points for 'the Most Hospitable Club' Yatton would have been convincing winners. As it was the Tics spluttered from 17-3 down to emerge 17-18 winners, courtesy of a late Steve Smith try following sustained forward pressure in the closing minutes of the game.
