TORQUAY Athletic's new player-coach Ben Cole (above)
has set his sights high for the coming campaign.
The Tics finished fourth in South West Two last
season and third the season before, but were never
better than promotion outsiders.
Cole, who has taken over as coach from long-serving
Drew Powell, isn't going to be happy with another
place among the also-rans.
"Our aim this season is a simple one - to finish in
the top two," said Cole.
"I know it is a bold statement, but our ambition has
to be getting out of this division.

"South
West Two isn't easy to get out of, ask Brixham. They
have been trying for 10 years and we don't want to be
in their position."
Torquay's pre-season has comprised a narrow defeat at
Exmouth and a 21-3 setback against the Westcountry
Warriors last Saturday. A hoped-for friendly against
Withycombe, now coached by former Tics stalwart Chris
Edwards, failed to materialise.
Cole said the Exmouth defeat could easily have been a
win and was a good work out to have early on. The
defeat by the Warriors, the jazzed up name for
Plymouth Albion's 2nd XV, was a little more
instructive.
"We won't come up against too many sides of that
quality in the league so it was encouraging we were
not out of our depth," said Cole.
"What the game did was focus on a few areas we have
to work on, not that I want to go into too many
details and give away too many of our secrets.
"We played some good rugby, but we played it in the
wrong parts of the pitch. It was hard getting into
their half."
Torquay have welcomed the Brixham quartet of Jon
Lamsin, Phil Maddick, Chris Dorling and Mike Beeson
with open arms as part of their squad strengthening.
"Any players who want to improve with us are always
welcome," said Cole.
Although Matt Allanson and Matt Jackson are missing
from the backline out against Sidmouth tomorrow,
that's because they are on holiday.
Speedy Tom Harris will cover for Allanson, although
he won't be around for long as he is off to college
in Cardiff soon.
The only notable departures are lock James Boyce
(Paignton), and utility back Glen Channing, who has
returned to home-town club Sidmouth. Channing joined
Torquay two years ago to improve his game when
Sidmouth were playing at a lower level. Now the clubs
are in the same division there isn't much point
making the trip.
