Yatton
17-18 Torquay
Torquay left it late again before snatching victory
with a try five minutes from time. The Tics crept past
Taunton by two points last week and gave themselves
an even bigger task this time around.
With an hour
played the Tics were 17-3 behind, but they turned the
game round in the next 15 minutes to snatch the
lead.
Then it was a case of battening down the
hatches for the last five minutes to keep the lead
intact.
Yatton's opener, scored by Nick Garnham, was arguably
against the run of play and came after Torquay
spilled the ball out in the wing.
Tony Hill converted that try, and a Mike Harris score
from an interception, then added a penalty for a 17-3
lead. In between Yatton's two tries, Torquay's Matt
Jackson chipped over a penalty.
Torquay battled back through their forwards to get
back in the game and it was fitting that No.8 Jon
Arnold scored the catch-and-drive try to narrow the
gap.
Yatton gave away a penalty almost from the restart
and Jackson reduced the arrears to six points with
the kick.
The closer Torquay got to the home line the less
Yatton liked it and under pressure their penalty
count soared.
Finally, Torquay got close enough for prop Steve
Smith to rumble over, aided by a timely shove from
centre Adam Last.
A win's a win, but Colin Rylance, the Tics playing
director, feels the side can do better than this.
"We didn't perform that well but came away with the
points so I am relatively happy," said Rylance.
'We tried to be a bit more inventive outside the
scrum and a few things which didn't come off. Perhaps
we were a bit too individual at times.
"The forwards played well again and one of these days
when everything clicks someone is going to suffer at
our hands."
